Our ramblings about marketing and web development – What's new and exciting this week

Social Media Marketing Strategy, New England Patriots HelmetIf you haven’t heard already, The New England Patriots have partnered up with Buddy Media to make a new Facebook page that is a great source of online content for fans. The Patriots Fan Zone presents fans with an opportunity to create their own network by taking part in team-related discussions with other fans and stay up to date on games and events throughout the season. You can also send Patriots-themed personal gifts, participate in Fantasy Forecast, win Patriots merchandise, and more!

The Patriots were looking for a way to make their social network presence bigger. “We weren’t anywhere [before] as it relates to social media. We had to get into the game, and to have that kind of audience we have on Facebook, you can’t get that kind of immediate impact on ,” stated Patriots Director of Interactive Media, Fred Kirsch.

Indeed, some of the features in the Fan Zone still link back to the Patriots’ official website, but overall Patriots fans are able to find more information on the Facebook fan page. The switch to social media was a necessary move, making it easier to bring fans together with an immediate impact. People are already familiar with the Patriots, so attracting fans to the fan page isn’t the issue. Because the page is already established, the Patriots can now use it to further implement marketing campaigns while adding a personal touch.

Take the Cleveland Cavaliers for example. They use social media to attract fans to content that builds a stronger connection with the team. On top of a huge presence on Facebook, the team uses Twitter on a regular basis to help fans connect with the team on a more personal level. The Cavaliers allow their followers on Twitter to access behind the scene interviews with players, including information that isn’t obtainable anywhere else.

The behind the scenes interviews that teams release on Facebook and YouTube and the personable experience they offer on Twitter are just a couple of examples that make these teams stand out through social media. Implementing a social media approach is a must in order to continue growing a fan base, especially with younger generation and the early adopters in the older generations.

While we appreciate the attention, I want to clarify that Facebook is not our primary source of online content; rather, an extension. Through Facebook we’re able to reach demographics that may not be regular visitors of Patriots.com. We use Facebook to interact with these fans in real time, as well as to give them a taste of our Patriots.com offerings.
