Our ramblings about marketing and web development – What's new and exciting this week

If you are one of those Twitter users who wonders how to get a lot of followers for the sake of having a lot of followers, I want to explain to you why this is not the best approach.

Mass following, which is following many people for the purpose of getting them to follow you back, is not beneficial. Twitter is used to build communities and have conversations with people. If you are following thousands of people for the sole purpose of getting them to follow you back, you are playing a numbers game. This doesn’t generate real followers, but people who are also trying to get their numbers high as well.

Considering the number of tweets, it would be nearly impossible to focus in on people who actually matter or offer good content. It would be like being in a room full of 1,000 people and trying to hold a conversation with each and every one of them. You want to be able to engage in conversation with the people you are following.

I’m not saying it is bad to follow thousands of people or have thousands of followers, but you want to make sure you are attracting them for the right reasons. This would be through the content you post, engaging people or educating them on topics you are both interested in.

Those of you that are reading this and are used to traditional media will disagree with me on quality versus quantity, but it is proven. In traditional media quantity does increase revenue. However, this is not true for social media. Social media is about engaging in conversation and talking to people.

I agree – this is not meant to be a popularity contest! How can you possibly interact with thousands, or hundreds of thousands of people anyway?

Thanks for your input, Cindy. It is impossible to interact with that many people! Too many people are still focusing on numbers. If a business is focusing on numbers through Twitter this will end up hurting them because they will miss out on interacting with potential clients or customers, or more importantly valuable information.

Absolutely Lauren agree with you. We need to focus on quality instead of quantity. We need people to ‘engage’ with and not just quantity.

Pervara, thanks so much for your comment. There is nothing that makes me not want to follow someone back more when I click on their profile and they are following 8,000 people but have 100 followers. That to me says they don’t care enough about what I have to say, but just followed me in hopes that I would follow them back.

    Thanks again,

    Lauren

[...] I’ll speak for myself on this one, but I am sure many of you that use Twitter can also agree that it’s one of the most annoying topics tweeted about! I automatically look at these users as spammers. This isn’t a numbers game! [...]
