Our ramblings about marketing and web development – What's new and exciting this week

It has happened to all of us- we sign into Twitter and notice we have lost some followers. You may wonder to yourself why or you may not be bothered by it at all.

For those of you who are bothered by losing followers, I compiled a list of a few Twitter don’ts to help you keep your followers and hopefully attract more:

1. Don’t constantly push your product/service/brand

People aren’t on Twitter to be sold to. Pushing your product/service/brand is OK once in a while, but not five times a day, seven days a week.

2. Don’t ignore your followers @replies or DMs

If someone takes the time to @reply you or send you a DM (don’t worry about the automated ones), don’t ignore them. You are not superior! This is your chance to have a personalized conversation with someone. After all, you are on Twitter to connect with people and build a community, right?

3. Don’t tweet about how you have the secret to getting people more followers

I’ll speak for myself on this one, but I am sure many of you that use Twitter can also agree that it’s one of the most annoying topics tweeted about! I automatically look at these users as spammers. This isn’t a numbers game!

4. Don’t tweet every minute of everyday

Yes, it’s true that not all of your tweets will be seen and read by all of your followers, but what’s the big deal? If you are a good source of content and information I can almost guarantee that users will visit your Twitter profile in search for valuable information.

5. Don’t unfollow your followers

Even though this makes you look great on Twitter (wow, you have 8,000 followers and you are only following 9 people), please don’t do it. For us advanced Twitter users, it is very easy to determine that you just joined Twitter, mass followed 8,000 people, waited for them to follow you back, and then unfollowed everyone. It is visible to everyone to see how many updates you have on Twitter and even the date you joined. If you only have 295 updates and joined last Monday, then you obviously shouldn’t have thousands of followers (unless of course you are famous). My example is exaggerated so I can get my point across!
