The online community just got closer.

Imagine a new project comes across your desk, and you have no idea how to get started or where to look for information. You are being asked to interview leading industry experts in a particular field, research findings from past case studies, and pull together a detailed plan of action. Or imagine you are a salesperson, new to your company or field, and need an “in” with the major players.

How do you get started? Where do you look for information? And how are you ever going to find a way to meet these people you are interviewing or attempting to pitch to?

Well, your job just got much easier.

Thanks to social networking sites like LinkedIn and Facebook, you can immediately reach out to the people you know, find out who they know, and request meetings with those just outside your circle. You can even setup your own profile so that others can find you when they’re looking for your services or just reaching out to see how far their network extends. For more information on how social networking can help you reduce the “6 Degrees of Separation” between you and the prospective customers you want to reach, download our free whitepaper.

You can post questions (typically free) on forums in your industry, or conduct an immediate online survey to generate responses from a network of qualified professionals. In the areas of marketing and website design, we will sometimes post concepts for client promotions to these groups in order to gain unbiased opinions. This has greatly helped us develop streamlined marketing and advertising campaigns that are sure to generate successful results for our clients.

There are job posting forums (far beyond Monster.com) where you can post positions to highly targeted professionals, or research a new job or career for yourself. You can “tweet” your colleagues throughout conferences or during long-term projects on Twitter, or “ping” them to pass information during online meetings.

Taking it a step further, you can even post photos from company events and seminars on a photo sharing site such as Flickr. By tagging the photos with targeted keywords and linking them to your website, you may have just found yourself another free advertising method to reach your target audience. Or you could create a YouTube video, link to it from your website, and offer prospective clients an in-depth view into your company, services, or products – far beyond what you could provide to them in writing or flat images.

If this has you interested, or you’re wondering how to use social networking or online marketing to take your company to the next level – give us a call. Or better yet meet up with one of us on LinkedIn or visit our blog... you get the drift. So what are you waiting for?
